"Jim White was a member of the First West Virginia Cavalry who was from Weston, West Virginia, and he served as a scout for much of his Civil War experience.  He was a member of Sheridan's Scouts during the 1864 and 1865 Shenandoah Campaigns during which he was involved in the capture of Harry Gilmor and the operation that resulted in the capture of Lee's resupply trains at Appomattox.  White later delivered a diplomatic note to Benito Juarez' government in 1867 requesting that Maximilian not be executed.

"White remained in the army as a scout and prepared a small booklet on his adventures that was approximately 30 pages long, was privately printed in small numbers, and was delivered to his friends and colleagues.  The booklet was prepared in New Orleans in approximately 1874 and contains first person accounts of clandestine Union Army operations against the Confederacy.  This material is needed to complete a military history study of Sheridan's Scouts."
